June Is National Acne Awareness Month

Looking good and feeling good goes hand in hand-this is why it can be so difficult for clients who suffer from acneic skin. Acne can have a devastating effect on self-esteem and confidence. Acne is an inflammatory lesion of the sebaceous glands which can be triggered by the onset of puberty, hormonal fluctuations, genetics and stress. Acne can flare up easily in teens and adults-especially women during pregnancy, menstrual periods and menopause. If a parent, brother or sister, or your child has acne it could be due to genetics. One study found that this was true of 50% of adults with acne. Stress won’t cause acne, but it can aggravate hormones that do. The higher the stress level, the higher the occurrence of acne.

The good news is that most acne can be treated with outstanding results, a three-tiered approach of professional esthetic treatments, a home care program, a healthy diet that includes nutritional supplements and possibly medication. Remember that acne did not occur in one day, and many times, it will take more than one treatment or product to clear up.

Your skin is unique to you. There isn’t a one-size-fits all acne treatment for everyone, and no miracle cures. That means you need to find an acne treatment that works best for your situation. There are a variety of options available today-everything from benzoyl peroxide to laser treatments to herbal remedies. It usually takes a bit of trial and error and some treatments or products can make your skin worse only before it gets better.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, home care regime and professional acne treatments will lead to healthier, more radiant skin. To learn more, please schedule a complimentary skin care consultation with one of our licensed aestheticians.
